First physical evidence 7th century.
Built in a loop of the river Severn.
Saxons named the town Scrobbesbyrig

The bury at the end of the name shows it was once a fortified settlement called a burgh.
In the 10th century Shrewsbury had a mint.

Normans built a wooden fort at Shrewsbury a rebellion in 1069 led to the town being burnt down.

Castle founded by Roger de Montgomery 1074.

Shrewsbury Abbey founded 1083 by Roger e Montgomery first Earl of Shrewsbury.
In the early 12th century Henry I gave the town its first charter.
Richard I gave Shrewsbury second charter in 1189.
1215 Shrewsbury captured by Welsh under their leader Llewelyn the Great.
1283 David Llywelyn brother of Llywelyn II of the Welsh brought to Shrewsbury where he was hung drawn and quartered on the high cross on Pride Hill.

1403 battle of Shrewsbury over 6,000 soldiers killed in 3 hours.
Henry Percy (Harry Hotspur) led rebellion against the crown of Henry lV and was killed.
His dead body was also hung drawn and quartered on the high cross on Pride Hill.
The high cross was the marker for many slayings and on the wall of Barclays Bank you can see a plaque telling of the executions.

1540 Henry VIII closed Shrewsbury Abbey.
1552 Shrewsbury School founded by Edward VI.
Ireland’s Mansion built approx 1575
Old Market Hall built around 1592
Rowley’s House built 1618.

18th Century two bridges rebuilt English Bridge built in 1770’s and Welsh Bridge in 1795-96.

Infirmary built in 1743.
St Chad’s Church rebuilt in 1792
1801 population just under 15,000
1809 Charles1821 Darwin born
1821 Improvement Commissioners created with powers to pave clean and light streets.
Cholera outbreaks in 1832 1849.
Railway to Chester opened in 1848 another to Wolverhampton in 1850
Music Hall built in 1840
Catholic Cathedral 1856
Market built in 1869
Two new bridges built Greyfriars 1880 and Kingsland 1882

First council houses between the wars.
Castle Bridge built 1951
New market 1963
Rowley’s House Museum 1938, Clive House Museum 1968 ( closed 1999) Shropshire Regimental Museum 1985
Darwin Shopping Centre 1989
Population 87,000 today approx.
